Telecom mobile customers only have a few days left to take advantage of a £5
discount on the their entry to this year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk. The
discount applies until midnight on January 31. Manx Telecom mobile customers
will be able to enter the 2014 event for just £25 instead of the full price of

The
walk takes place on Saturday June 21 with the final entry deadline being May
11. David Smith, Manx Telecom Marketing Director, said the discount for its
mobile customers had proved to be a great way to attract new participants to
the event in recent years. He added: “This year there will be new team trophies
for younger walkers aged 18 to 21. We hope that these trophies, and the £5
discount, will particularly appeal to younger competitors and inspire them to
take up the Manx Telecom Parish Walk challenge for the first time – but the £5
discount is on offer for all of our mobile customers and is part of our rewards
scheme which runs all year round.”
Thenew awards for younger walkers will be a competition for teams of three aged 18
to 21 walking the 32.5 miles to Peel. The winners will be the team with the
fastest combined time of all three walkers, and there will be separate prizes
for men’s and women’s teams. This year’s race will again feature a Corporate
Challenge category for teams of four who must all be bona fide employees of the
same company, and no team can have more than one member who has previously
completed the full 85-mile Parish Walk. There is also an overall team
competition for walkers of any age, but with the rule that no more than two of
the four team members have previously finished the full Parish Walk course. All
participants – including those for the team and Corporate Challenge events –
must enter individually. To enter the team events, entrants simply put the name
of their team or Corporate Challenge team on the online entry form. All
entrants in all categories will receive a commemorative technical tee-shirt and
goodie bag.
Manx
Telecom’s association with the Parish Walk goes back to 2007 when the Island’s
leading telecommunications company began providing timing and results services.
The company became title sponsor for the event in 2012 and recently announced
that this sponsorship will continue until 2017. The Manx Telecom Parish Walk
can trace its roots back to the 1850s, but the first event that is comparable
to the modern format was held in 1913. That year there was an event called the
Parish Walking Match organised by the Isle of Man Times and the Manx Sporting
Club. The 2013 event marked its centenary.
